100 Years of World Guiding

1908    -           1st Camp for Bys at Brownsea Island

1909    -           The First Boys Scouts Rally at Crystal Palace

1910    -           Baden – Powel officially started the Girl Guide Movement

1912    -           Baden – Powell met Juliette Law and Started Guiding then

1913    -           The name changed to Girl Scouts in America

1914    -           The Brownies Started (Rosebuds)

The first Brownie Badge (Owl – changed to wisebird Kenya)

1916    -           Rangers and senior groups formed

1918    -           Extension Guiding

Olave Baden-Powell appointed Chief Guide.

1919    -           First International Council started with 20 Countries

1920    -           1st International Conference

1st Nairobi and Nakuru Guide Company formed

1922    -           Official recognition of the Kenya Girl Guides Association by London

1926    -           Thinking Day started (Baden Powell and his wife Olave Baden – Powell’s

1928    -           World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Formed

1931    -           Queen Mary opens New Guide Headquarters at Buckingham Palace Road

1932    -           1st World Guide Center (Our Chalet in Switzerland opened)

1935    -           Lady Baden-Powell visited Kenya

1st Asian Company formed. 6th Aga Khan Company Flock

1936    -           1st African Guide Company in Kenya

1937    -           Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret enrolled as Guides

1938    -           Baden-Powell and his family came to Kenya to live

1939    -           Lady Olave Baden-Powell became colony Chief Commissioner in Kenya

1941    -           Lord Baden-Powell died at 83 years and buried in Nyeri.

1943    -           Trefoil Guild was formed

1946    -           The Queens badge was instituted

1947    -           Lady Olave Baden-Powell visited Kenya

1949    -           Margaret Kenyatta was the 1st Guider warranted

1952    -           Princess Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh visited Kenya

1953    -           Coronation Year – Queen becomes joint patron with Queen Elizabeth the

Queen Mother

1954    -           Air Ranger started in Nairobi

1956    -           Our magazine on Princess Margaret came to Kenya as World Chief

Ranger. She took part in the Guides rally

1957    -           Centenary year of Baden-Powell.

Opening of Our Cabana world centre.

1958    -           Parties of Rangers and Rovers climed Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro.

1960    -           Golden Jubilee – World.

1962    -           40th Anniversary of Kenya Guiding

1963    -           Lady Olave Baden-Powell opened the Kenya Girl Guides Association

Kenya became a Tenderfoot member of WAGGGS.

Hannah Rubia was elected the President of Kenya Girl Guides Association

Naomi Nandwa became a qualified African Trainer.

Kenyatta.

Mama Ngina became the Patron of Kenya Girl Guides Association

3 Kenyan Guiders attended the first International Camp in Madagascar.

Wilhelmina Makokha – first professional trainer

1966    -           Opening of Sangam World Center

1967    -           Mrs. Evonne Muli became the 1st African Chief Commissioner.

1968    -           The 1st Juliette Low Seminar attended by 2 Kenyan Rangers in USA.

1st East and Central African Training of Trainers

1969    -           80th Birth day celebration of Lady Olave Baden-Powell

1970    -           Mrs. Obel appointed Chief Commissioner

1972    -           Golden Jubilee of KGGA

1975    -           Kenya became a full member of WAGGGS

1977    -           Lady Olave Baden-Powell died and remains were buried in Nyeri

1981    -           Barbara Ubago First Regional Commissioner for Nairobi, the first to be

awarded the Trainers Diploma in Kenya. The others include; Mrs. W.N

Makokha, Miss Anne C. Barangi; Mrs. Naomi Zani and Miss Birgit Jeusen.

1982    -           Kenya Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

1985    -           Kenya Celebrates 75th Anniversary of World Guiding

1987    -           Kenya Hosted the 26th World Conference – The First ever World

Conference held in Africa

Rainbows (3 – 6yrs) introduced in the World.

1989    -           100th Anniversary of Lady Olave Baden-Powell – Fundraising towards

Kenya Room at Pax lodge

1992    -           International Camp at Rowallan – 70th of KGGA

1994    -           Launch of Peace Initiative

(Water is Life) – International Camp

1997    -           Renovation of Kenya Girl Guides Association Headquarters and 75th

Anniversary of KGGA

Visit of Princess Benedict

1998    -           Launch of Trefoil Guild in Kenya by Honorine R. Kiplagat

Official opening of renovated Headquarters by H.E. Daniel Arap Moi

President of Kenya.

1991    -           Lady Joyce Aluoch, Avni Davi and Honorine Kiplagat become members

of the Olave Baden – Powell Society (OBPS)

2001    -           Hosting of Olave Baden-Powell Society Annual General Meeting

1st Meeting in Africa

2002    -           Brenda Goodman becomes a member of Olave Baden Powell Society.

200      -           Mrs. Honorine Kiplagat elected Africa Region Chairman

2008    -           Mrs. Wamuyu Mahinda elected to serve in the WAGGGS Board

Honorable Lady Justice Alouch appointed as International Criminal Court

Judge in the Hague.

2006    -           Africa Region meeting held in Kenya

2009    -           1st Juliette Low Seminar held in Kenya

2010    -           Mrs. Honorine Kiplagat awarded WAGGGS bronze award in the 9th

Africa Region Conference.
