Saka Goat Keeping Project

 

KGGA runs the Saka Girl Guide Goat Keeping Project in Garissa district of North Eastern Province.
it targets the girls from Somali tribe, an ethnic minority and  aims at providing a source of revenue for the girls to enable them attain their educational goals and develop their leadership skills, group dynamics and team work.

 The project has helped increase the awareness of girl child education in the area (Saka town)

Goats play a significant role in ensuring livelihood security to the inhabitants of Garissa town. Saka goat keeping project which was initiated in 2006 has had a great impact on Saka community by improving the lives of the girls who have participated.

The Saka Girl Guides take care of the goats in patrols. Additional funding enabled the whole school compound to be fenced off and to build a water tank complete with a pump away from the river, where crocodiles endangered the lives of the girls and the goats. Water can be stored for use by all students.

The Kenyan government provides free primary education but most families are unable to find secondary school fees resulting in school dropouts for girls in the Cushite community. This often results to early marriages and unwanted pregnancies. The goats provide nutrients (milk and meat) and income through their breeding and sale.
